PH365 Reels: Columns, Rows and What a Grid Lets a Spin Pay

Reels are the vertical columns of a slot; rows are the symbols each column shows.

There is no single best slot game; there is a best fit for a session.
PH365 How to Win Slot Sessions
No method beats a slot's random number generator: every spin is independent, and the house edge applies over time.
PH365 Respins
Respins re-spin some reels while other symbols stay in place, usually after a near-win or a special symbol lands.
PH365 Slot Multiplier
A slot multiplier scales a win by a factor, such as 2x or 20x.

Reels are not the whole story of a slot; they are its frame. Reels, in plain terms, are the vertical columns that spin and stop, each showing a set number of symbols called rows. This page belongs to the slot casino figures page, and it shows how the grids of the titles this site covers differ and what that changes for you.

Reels, rows and positions

Multiply reels by rows and you have the number of symbols that land on each spin.

Three ways a grid pays

The grid sets what lands; the pay system decides what counts. Three systems cover the titles here.

  1. Paylines. Fixed paths across the reels, usually from the left. Boxing King runs 88 lines; Fortune Gems 2 runs 5. The paylines entry explains why a fixed line count makes the stake a per-spin cost.
  2. Ways. Matching symbols on adjacent reels pay in any row. Super Ace Deluxe lists 1024 ways.
  3. Clusters or pay-anywhere. Groups of matching symbols pay wherever they touch or wherever they land; big grids such as Sugar Rush’s 7x7 suit this.

Shapes that change by the spin

Some grids are not fixed. PG Soft’s Wild Bounty Showdown lists a 6-reel layout whose reel heights run 3-4-5-5-4-3, so the middle reels show more symbols than the outer ones. A changing or uneven grid changes the number of ways a spin can pay from one spin to the next.

What reels do not tell you

A bigger grid is not a more generous game. Studios set the RTP with the grid already in the maths, so a 7x7 game and a 3x3 game can return the same share over time. What the grid changes is the feel: more symbols mean more small combinations and, often, bigger features. For a feature that plays with the reels themselves, read how respins hold and re-spin reels; for titles ranked by session type, the best slot game shortlist lists each grid beside its volatility.

FAQ

What is the meaning of reels in a slot?

The vertical columns that spin and stop. Each reel shows a number of symbols, called rows, and together they form the grid.

What does 5x3 mean on a slot?

Five reels and three rows, so 15 symbols land on each spin. Wolf Gold and Big Bass Splash both use a 5x3 grid.

Do more reels mean better odds?

No. More reels and rows change how often combinations form and how big they can be, but the studio sets the RTP with the grid already counted.
